Week #10 Reflection

Dream Big: Commitment and the Hero's Journey

Introduction This week’s study emphasized the importance of dreaming big, pursuing passions, and embracing commitment in both personal and professional contexts. The core theme was the importance of courageously pursuing meaningful goals, anchored in deep commitment, despite challenges or setbacks.

Key Insights

From A Field Guide for the Hero's Journey, the chapter highlighted that every significant journey begins with the courage to commit fully. Commitment isn't passive; it involves actively choosing to invest yourself completely into something meaningful, despite fear or uncertainty. This aligns with Kathy Huber’s insights from "Acton Hero Kathy Huber," who emphasized persistence in pursuing dreams, demonstrating the power of unwavering commitment in achieving personal goals and overcoming setbacks.

The video "License to Pursue Dreams" further emphasized the need to give ourselves permission to fully pursue our dreams. Commitment requires not just dreaming big but acting intentionally. We must trust in our capacity, combined with faith in divine guidance, to achieve goals that may initially seem daunting.

The "Your Emotional Fingerprint" video reinforced the uniqueness of individual motivations. Commitment requires recognizing and understanding what deeply drives us—our core emotional fingerprints. Knowing what genuinely motivates us strengthens our resolve and helps us persist in our commitments, especially when faced with challenges.

Gospel Connection

Gospel teachings strongly support the importance of deep commitment. Doctrine and Covenants 58:27 states, "Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will" (Doctrine and Covenants 58:27). This scripture emphasizes the proactive nature of commitment: it's about willingly choosing and passionately pursuing good causes.

Additionally, the prophet Alma teaches us about faithful commitment, instructing, "if ye have experienced a change of heart...can ye feel so now?" (Alma 5:26, Book of Mormon). This highlights that commitment is not a one-time event but an ongoing dedication, continually reaffirmed through consistent effort and reflection.

Application and Reflection

Applying these insights into my life means clearly defining my dreams and deliberately choosing to pursue them despite uncertainties. Practically, I will commit myself to intentional actions every day, aligned with both my relationship goals and personal aspirations. It involves clearly understanding what motivates me emotionally, spiritually, and relationally, and consistently aligning my actions with these insights.

When teaching or guiding others, I’ll emphasize the importance of clarity about their dreams and motivations. I’ll encourage others to reflect deeply on their emotional fingerprint, acknowledging their unique gifts and passions. Ultimately, cultivating deep commitment supported by gospel truths can lead to richer fulfillment and genuine growth, making dreams attainable realities.
